Download Super Preview

Version 0.1.0 · Nov 8, 2026

Windows

macOS

Linux

Run this in a terminal to install it for your user:

curl -fsSL https://static.superpreview.app/super-preview/releases/latest/download/install.sh | bash

Or download a file below and install it by hand.

Windows packages are not code-signed yet, so SmartScreen will ask you to confirm: More info, then Run anyway. Every file has a checksum in SHA256SUMS.

One reader for every kind of document

Open PDFs, Word files, spreadsheets, eBooks, comics, pictures, Markdown and code in one window.

  • Free
  • Your files stay on your computer
  • Mac, Windows and Linux

It is inspired by Apple's Preview. Open a file, drop it on the window, or pick Super Preview in Open With.

Every kind of document, in one window

Super Preview picks the right view for each file. Open several at once and switch between them in the sidebar.

PDFs

Turn the pages and follow the links inside. Zoom in and out to read the small print.

Word and OpenDocument files

Read .docx and .odt files as clean pages. You don’t need an office suite.

Spreadsheets

Open .xlsx, .xls, .ods, .csv and .tsv files. A workbook with more than one sheet gets a tab for each.

eBooks and comics

Read .epub books with their table of contents. Comics in .cbz can show two pages side by side.

Pictures

Fit a picture to the window, or see it at its actual size. PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and SVG all open.

Markdown, code and text

Markdown shows as a clean page, with a switch to see the source. Code gets colours and line numbers, and a JSON file can open as a tree.

Always the latest version

Change a file in another app, then come back. Super Preview shows the new version.

A look that fits your desktop

Pick the macOS, Windows or GNOME style, in light, dim or dark. Then choose an accent colour.

Why use it

  • One app for many files. PDFs, Office files, books, comics, pictures and code all open in the same window.
  • Your files stay with you. Every file is read on your computer and never uploaded.
  • Quick to reach. Pick it in Open With, drop a file on the window, or press ⌘O, or Ctrl+O on Windows and Linux.
  • Free. There is no account to make.
  • Up to date. The app updates itself.

Questions

Is it free? Yes. There is no account to make and nothing to sign up for.

Which computers does it run on? Macs with macOS 13 or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. Also 64-bit Windows, and Linux on x86_64 or arm64.

Can I edit files with it? No, it is a reader. Edit in your usual app, and the changes show up here when you come back.

Are my files uploaded anywhere? No. Super Preview reads every file on your own computer.

Is there anything it can’t open yet? Rich text (.rtf) shows as raw text for now, and .cbr comics don’t open yet. Known limitations has the details.
